7-8.5 Upgrade
Introduction
8.5.1 is IBM's most significant upgrade in years. They have been listening to what their customers wanted and have invested significantly to both dramatically improve ease of use and deliver real cost savings. Software vendors always promote their upgrades as the "latest and greatest" but Scoped Solutions advice is that this is a platform that you seriously consider moving to, and we'll help you get there quickly and efficiently.
Key Benefits
Save time.
Time is money. IBM's studies show that the typical Lotus Notes 8.5.1 user saves 20 minutes each day, compared to using earlier versions. Key time-saving features include:
- e-Mail Preview Pane
- View e-Mails by conversation (like a discussion thread)
- e-Mail addresses automatically filled in as you start typing
- Prebuilt and custom Widgets for direct access to information
- Ability to consolidate multiple calendars
- Drag and drop e-mail to calendar to schedule a meeting and drag to reschedule
Other popular user features include:
- Message recall
- Improved style and "look and feel"
- Recipient business card appears as you begin typing their e-mail address
Lotus Domino administrators save even more time using features like ID Vault, which lets them reset passwords without access to the ID file itself. The Shared Login support gives administrators the option to allow users to use their Windows login as their Notes password.
Reduce hardware. Save disk space.
Disk space and servers are a very real cost to organizations. IBM has added several spacesaving features to Release 8.5.1. The most dramatic, called DAOS1 (Domino Attachment and Object Services), saves an attachment once even if it has been sent to multiple users. Space saving results will vary from customer to customer based on a number of factors but you should expect at least a 25-30% reduction in disk space. This savings in disk space can be easily validated as you plan your upgrade by running the Estimator Tool.
Quickly Add Value to your Applications Fewer clicks.
Instead of searching for a database icon to do a common task, components can be placed in the Lotus Notes Sidebar. These components or plug-ins are always available on the right side of the screen, only one click away. Lotus Sametime, RSS Feed and Calendar plug-ins come with Lotus Notes. Your custom applications can be modified to expose frequently-used components in the Sidebar for fast access. Other products can be integrated into Lotus Notes via the sidebar including:
- Lotus Quickr
- SAP, using the joint IBM and SAP developed "Alloy" offering
- Plug-ins from LinkedIn, salesforce.com, etc.
Application access from anywhere.
Making applications available to web browser users is now much easier and faster with XPages. Applications that are already built can now be extended to business partners and customers, or to your own staff who may be working in locations where they do not have access to a Lotus Notes client. XPages applications developed for the browser environment can be run off-line within the Notes client.
Scoped Solutions can help to make Lotus Notes applications available on mobile devices such as Blackberry, iPhone and Android devices using XPages.
For most smartphones there is now support for e-mail,Contacts and Calendar is also now available using Lotus Traveller.
